Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a delicious tres leches cake! (Photo by: Daniela Montiel)
With Hispanic Heritage here, you may be thinking of a fun way to celebrate. One way to celebrate would be to go out and find a Latin restaurant. But instead of spending over $25 on food and dessert, why not spend $15 or less to make a delicious Latin dessert in the comfort of your own home?
If you are not the best baker, there is no need to worry as this recipe may be the easiest you will ever find. This dessert recipe will take no longer than an hour to create and bake. And it is one of the most delicious cakes in the world: Tres Leches!
Tres leches is a sweet and moist cake, originating in Nicaragua. The treat is enjoyed across all Latin America, and is one of the most popular Latin desserts.
The name of the cake explains the most important part of the cake and what makes the dessert so tasty. Tres translates to “three” and leches translates to “milks” and therefore, three milks. The three milks used to make the cake are sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk or heavy cream.
Now that you know the basic background of the desert, you can begin gathering your materials and ingredients for this recipe.
Kitchenware needed:
2 mixing bowls
whisk/electric mixer
non-stick cooking spray
9x13 inch pan
a fork
Ingredients needed:
1 box of white or yellow cake mix
4 eggs
1 stick of butter
2 cups whole milk
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 can evaporated milk
whipped topping
fruit of choice
Once you have all of your materials and ingredients, you can finally start the recipe!
Steps:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. While the oven preheats, begin the cake mixture. Pour the bag of cake mix into a bowl, add the 4 eggs, melt the whole stick of butter and pour it into the bowl. Mix using a whisk/electric mixer.
Spray the 9x13 pan with the non-stick cooking spray, and then pour the cake mixture into the pan.
Put the pan into the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. After baking, let the cake cool for 10-20 minutes.
While the cake cools, begin the milk mixture. In another bowl, whisk the full cans of sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk, and cup of whole milk.
Once the cake is cool, poke holes in the cake with a fork. Then pour the milk mixture all around the top of the cake.
Refrigerate the cake for at least an hour, although more than an hour would provide better results. Then add the whipped topping and your choice of fruit. (My preferred choice is cherries!)
Finally, enjoy!
