Casper: The Movie is a live-action/animation hybrid released in 1995, starring actors Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman as well as Devon Sawa, who plays the real-life Casper outside his ghostly form. It is based on the popular cartoon character, Casper the Friendly Ghost, and takes place in a 1990s setting.
When this film came out all those years ago, it was a massive success. It made over $200 million at the box office, was well-received by audiences, and spawned a franchise of animated series, video games, and sequels. Even now, the movie has gained a massive following, with some considering it a Halloween classic.
Due to the 30th anniversary in October, some theatres re-released it, including Mansfield’s own Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas.
On October 3, I went to see the movie in my local theatre and it was a wonderful experience.
As an avid Christina Ricci fan, I was not going to let myself miss the opportunity to go see one of her movies in theatres, new or old. Funny enough, as this is one of my most-chosen Christina movies to watch ever, she has a different take on the movie. In many interviews, she has stated that it is the most embarrassing movie she has ever done, based on her being a teenager and hormonal. For me, it was the experience of seeing the movie in person more than what the movie was about.
Summary
If you were wondering what the movie was about, I will keep it simple and try not to give any spoilers. The main character is Dr. James Harvey, who tries to help the friendly-but-ghostly Casper, along with his daughter – who is played by Ricci. I suggest you watch it to get the whole story, which is a pretty cute one. Very 90s.
My Experience and Rating of the Movie
The experience of seeing one of Christina’s movies in theatres was super fun. I actually forgot some of the scenes from the movie and was like, “Wow, kinda forgot that happened.” I have seen this movie about five times, but I still forgot somehow. My mother went with me as well because a love of Christina is something we share. Whether she is a big fan of hers or not, she was the one to take me to meet her.
I think it’s cute and is one of my favorites, but not her best. Personally, I think Prozac Nation or Distorted, which is also a Halloween/horror film, are better.
But for the experience, I would give it a 5.5 because I had finally seen one of Christina’s movies in theatres and it was unforgettable. For the streamers out there, this movie is currently on Netflix and Hulu.
