Attention all sushi and Japanese cuisine lovers!
Next time you find yourself with time in Hackettstown, stop into Fujiyama, located at 1954 NJ-57, across the street from the ShopRite. Fujiyama is a fine Japanese restaurant that will blow your mind and get you hooked on their signature sushi rolls.
Fujiyama has two floors. The Hibachi Room is located on the first floor, which is open Monday - Thursday (11:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.), Friday - Saturday (11:30 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.), and Sunday (Noon - 10 p.m.). The Dining Room is located on the second floor, open during the same hours but is closed for an hour (3 p.m. - 4 p.m.) daily.
In the Dining Room, you can find the friendly owner who travels table to table to personally check in on each guest. His kindness adds to the already homey feel of family-run Fujiyama.
"Oh, [Fujiyama’s] great!” said frequent customer Brittany Wrigley. “I’ve gone a lot for birthdays, dates, and celebrations. It’s never disappointed me once. The food is great, and everyone’s always super nice. It was actually the first place I ever tried sushi, and now it’s my favorite food."
While pricey for college students, Fujiyama’s fine Japanese cuisine is worth every penny. Their chefs are incredibly creative and make sushi combos that both pique your interest and make your mouth water. Who knew apple or banana in sushi could taste so good?
Cyclone Chronicle Managing Editors Carmella Vitel, Elizabeth May, and Cyclone Chronicle mascot Zeena ordered ten sushi rolls on their visit. The duo chose to do one of the special platters, consisting of five basic rolls and five designer rolls.

For their basic rolls, they got the Eel & Kirby, the California, the Philadelphia, the Spicy tuna, and the Shrimp tempura. For their designer rolls, Joker Jason, Don’t Ask Me (Vitel’s favorite), Who Knows, Pink Lady, and Hackettstown (May’s favorite).

“Don’t Ask Me has become my go-to order in a single visit,” said Vitel. “The fried roll brought a uniquely savory taste to the table with an unforgettable burst of flavor that has me already anticipating my next visit.”
“The Hackettstown caught my eye because it had apples and asparagus in it, and I was curious about what it would taste like,” said May. “The crispiness of the apples added something special to the roll. I think it’s safe to say I’ve found one of my new favorite rolls.”

May and Vitel’s meal consisted of ten rolls (five basic and five designer) for $100, which, if you break it down, is $10 a roll. If they had ordered the rolls without doing the special platter, it would’ve been around $130, making the special platters worth buying. Plus, you get a sushi boat—depending on the platter—and who doesn’t want a sushi boat?
Now, sushi isn’t for everyone, but don’t worry. Outside of their extensive sushi offerings, Fujiyama has something for everyone. Their menu includes Bulgogi, Ebi Maki, all kinds of teriyaki, and so much more. Their appetizers are just as delicious. The Fuji Shrimp Pops and Tempura-Oyster are May’s go-to.
Fujiyama is one of Hackettstown's handful of sushi places, and its excellent Japanese cuisine proves it’s here to stay. So next time you find yourself craving something other than a cheeseburger, swing into Fujiyama.
