FOUND DEAD: John Castic and Karl Clemente–A Mystery Unraveled
Since 2017, the Brooklyn Mirage consistently shines as a prominent star in the thrilling world of New York City's music and nightlife–drawing dance music enthusiasts and concertgoers from near and far. This colossal open-air nightclub and EDM event venue stands tall in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Yet, this past summer, a series of events have the venue catching more fire than the sequel to “The Hunger Games.” The mysterious disappearances and deaths of two visitors, coupled with a lawsuit, have left the surrounding area and visitors searching for answers.
Karl Clemente, a 27-year-old psychologist, and John Castic, a 27-year-old Goldman Sachs analyst, both died mysteriously and tragically after attending events at the Mirage. The circumstances surrounding their disappearances have raised numerous questions and concerns.
Clemente's story happened on the 11th of this past June when he attempted to gain access to an event at the Mirage, one of Avant Gardner's renowned venues. Staff at the door turned him away, stating that he had been drinking.
Tragically, he was later found dead in Newtown Creek, a waterway just a short distance from the venue. Security footage shows him walking toward a nearby gas station but there seems to be a significant gap in his whereabouts afterward. His wallet and phone were missing when his body was discovered.
John Castic's disappearance followed a similar, mysterious pattern. Upon attending a “Zeds Dead” show at the Brooklyn Mirage on July 28, 2023, Castic apparently left the venue around 2:30 a.m. Security footage captured him apparently acting regular as he walked out. However, his phone later pinged his location near the Metropolitan Avenue Bridge, close to Newtown Creek, where his lifeless body was found on August 1. Castic was shirtless, but his wallet, phone, and keys were discovered on him.
The mystery grows as the authorities have yet to figure out the causes of these tragic deaths. Autopsy results are seemingly still pending as of late August—leaving friends and families anxiously awaiting answers. To date, there is no evidence suggesting foul play or a link between the two cases.
Family Concerns & the Ongoing Investigation
According to a New York Post article published on Aug. 4, 2023, John Castic's father, Jeffrey Castic, “confirmed” in a phone interview that his 27-year-old son apparently died by drowning after attending the Mirage, raising concerns of a possible deadly allergic reaction to peanuts. However, one cannot be entirely convinced of the feasibility of an allergic reaction to peanuts leading to Castic's dramatic discovery in a creek strangely without clothing.
As of mid-September 2023, Alex Clemente, the grieving father of Karl Clemente, remains without closure and vocal about seeking answers regarding his son's tragic death after vanishing from the Brooklyn Mirage–alongside Castic. Worries have been raised about the media's varying levels of attention to the two cases, potential discrimination in the investigations, and a lack of updates from the New York Police Department (NYPD). NYC Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez has vowed to advocate for better lighting and cell service near the Brooklyn Mirage to prevent similar incidents in the future–echoing the feelings of Alex Clemente, who remains determined not to give up in his mission for answers.
Legal Action Against the Brooklyn Mirage
While the disappearances remain blanketed in uncertainty, a lawsuit has added another layer of weight to the Brooklyn Mirage’s burden.
Jacob Chen—an attorney, and concert goer who attended the Brooklyn Mirage’s Alegria Pride 2023 event, has filed a lawsuit citing allegations of mistreatment by security personnel hired for the show. Chen claims that numerous attendees were subject to unwarranted and intrusive sexual assault by the security guards.
The lawsuit requests a massive payout of $1,000 for everyone who attended the Alegria Pride 2023 event, potentially amounting to millions of dollars. Chen argues that the Brooklyn Mirage, a venue that has profited heavily in part due to the LGBTQ+ community, must be held accountable for the mistreatment of its patrons.
While the Brooklyn Mirage has yet to respond officially to the lawsuit, the silence from the club's owners has been turning heads. The lack of a public statement or apology for this alleged mistreatment has only added fuel to the fire of unhappiness among the LGBTQ+ community.
The Call for Increased Safety Protocols
These developments have raised questions not only about the safety and security of the Brooklyn Mirage but also about the venue's standing with local authorities and Williamsburg residents. People are concerned—and they are demanding increased safety protocols at the venue, including better lighting, stricter regulations on the surplus of unlicensed taxis that layer the nearby streets around it, and an improved security presence.
As Centenary University stands approximately 60 miles away from the Brooklyn Mirage, our community might seem distanced from these events. Still, the disappearances of Karl Clemente and John Castic, both young professionals who shared the love of music and going out, stand as a reminder that the draw to any city’s nightlife scene often requires great responsibility, including making safety-conscious decisions, constantly being aware of your surroundings, and opting for group travel.
Wrap-Up
As the investigations into these troubling incidents continue, we can only hope that some answers can be found, not only for the sake of the victims' families but also for the countless music fans and concertgoers who visit the Mirage in pursuit of good times.
For the Brooklyn Mirage, the journey for both entertainment and justice continues, leaving us to really think about the trouble behind the laser beams and basslines of New York's nightlife.
