My favorite holiday tradition is lighting candles on the Menorah for Hanukkah. Each year, my family and I light candles and say a prayer for Hanukkah. We light the candles, and there are eight holders on the menorah for all eight days of Hanukkah. We also give each other gifts. My family and I like to FaceTime if I am in school when they do the candles. We let the candles burn all night after we light them while saying the prayer in Hebrew.
My favorite memory of Hanukkah is going to my aunt’s house to celebrate the holiday with my grandparents and my cousins, and we exchanged gifts, and ate latkes. My cousins and I would usually play in their basement because they have a lot of cool stuff to occupy ourselves with.
I think Hanukkah is special because I get to be with my family, and celebrate my heritage and culture every year by lighting the Menorah for all eight nights of the holiday. I think this is also special because my family and I get to pick our presents for each other, and I think that it’s meaningful that we think of everyone in my family and what kinds of things they would like for a present each year.
Another thing I like about Hanukkah is picking out the color of the candles of the menorah. I like to get candles that have a lot of color to them and have designs on them so it can look nice when we light them. I hope that my family and I can continue to celebrate Hanukkah each year and give gifts together, because being with family is important as well as continuing to celebrate my culture.
