You’re giddy with excitement, standing on the sidewalk in the cold, dressed as a popular superhero or television character. Fun, spooky music blasts in the distance and kids rush past as you make your way up a stranger’s walk. You extend your arm and knock until someone comes to the door in a witch’s hat and cloak, beaming with delight. “Trick or treat,” springs from your lips as the jovial stranger offers a plastic orange bowl of delectable sweets. Which of your favorites are you grabbing before thanking them and rushing off to the next house?
Two days before Halloween, the Cyclone Chronicle staff bustled around campus asking students to name their favorite Halloween candy. 74 students were surveyed in the straw poll, with 78 responses recorded when several students couldn't decide between two preferences.
Winners
Not surprisingly, Reese’s peanut butter cups came in first place with 18 votes. Those chocolate covered peanut butter ridged circles of heaven never disappoint.
In second place, with 11 students who wanted to have a break, was Kit-Kats.
In third place is a Hackettstown legend with seven votes: M&M’s. Around here, they're beloved. In the early mornings, you can even smell the sweet aroma from the heating and mixing of the chocolate in the factory vats.
Runner- Ups
Twix find themselves in fourth place with five votes. Now, the real question is, left or right?
Next are the Milky Way and Starbursts, tied in fifth place for those astronomy fans out there, with four votes each.
Butterfingers, Tootsie Rolls, Snickers, and Nerds tied for sixth place with three votes each. If you’re not careful, those Tootsie Rolls will slip right out of your butterfingers.
Sour Patch Kids and Laffy Taffy find themselves in seventh place with two votes each. Laffy Taffy is obvious since it’s usually only seen mixed in those Halloween candy variety packs. But Sour Patch Kids? Those are usually a favorite among kids all year round. “First, they’re sour; then, they’re sweet.” What’s not to love?
Single Votes
In eighth and last place, the Cyclone Chronicle saw thirteen different candies tied with one vote each.
These were Three Musketeers, Gummy Krabby Patties, Candy Corn, Lollipops, Dots, Reese’s Pieces, Whoppers, Gummy Bears, Air Heads, Skittles, Sour Skittles, Smarties, and Swedish Fish– all excellent choices.
And notice: only three of the thirteen were chocolate.
Polling Locations
Newspaper staff made their way around the dining hall, dorms, the Edward W. Seay Building, the quad, the sunken lounge, Taylor Memorial Library, the Academic Success office, and the Littel Technology Center on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Responses were much more comfortable and questions more well-received than the last poll regarding the presidential election. Students and staff were more excited to answer the simple question regarding their favorite Halloween sweet treat. Individuals who voted for the first and second place winners were passionate about their choice, making Reese’s and Kit-Kats a campus favorite.
Happy Halloween!
Have fun and stay safe out there on Thursday night, whether you’re throwing candy to children from the dorm windows, trick-or-treating, attending a costume party, or going to see Soul Samurai at 7 p.m. at the Kutz Theater in Lackland (Remember: Student tickets are $5).
And, if you are going to be out, dress accordingly; the temperature is supposed to get up near 80°.
