Eighteen Centenary University students faced off in an intense Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament, battling for the top prize—a $25 Amazon gift card for both first and second place—in the popular Nintendo Switch video game that many students play on their own Nintendo Switch consoles. Let’s get ready for round three!
Hosted by Student Activities, the Smash Bros. Tournament was held in the Cyberspace of the Student Activities Center (SAC) on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m.
Although the atmosphere began calm, it quickly turned intense as each round progressed. The tournament’s epic climax came when Julian Alston, a freshman here at Centenary, emerged victorious, claiming the $25 Amazon gift card. Daniel Murphy, a sophomore, secured second place, concluding a thrilling battle to the finish!
Here’s what competitors had to say about the event:
“Winning the Smash Bros. Tournament was great because I thought I was going to lose,” said Alston, the grand winner. “I would definitely attend again if the event were hosted and encourage other students to go as well.”
“This Smash Bros. tourney was a great event, especially toward the end when everyone gathered to watch the final four competitors,” said David Espino, a senior at Centenary.
“The tournament was a lot of fun. It was exciting to compete against others who were at a similar skill level in Smash,” added Osaivbie Igiebor, also a senior and previous winner.
With the success of this tournament, students can look forward to another gaming event like this later this semester. Each tournament will feature a different game.
For students who missed out on this tournament, don’t worry! It’s become a regular on-campus event every semester since I first covered it last fall in October 2023.
Students can make requests for other gaming tournament ideas to Student Activities in the Welcome Center.
Here’s to this tradition continuing for many semesters to come!
