In such a diverse country, it is important to celebrate the many aspects of various cultures. A widely known celebration for the history and influence of Hispanics in America is Hispanic Heritage Month. This fun celebration lasts from September 15 to October 15.
This year during the last week of Hispanic Heritage Month, EOP held their “fiesta” on Oct. 10 for students and staff to honor an important aspect of Hispanic culture: the amazing and flavorful food. In the Ferry building, many colorful decorations, such as the flags of the 21 Spanish speaking countries were hung on the walls, and tables were set up to create a celebratory ambiance.
The tables on the second floor of the building contained over ten Hispanic dishes. Some of the dishes served were chicken, beef, and cheese empanadas, pollo guisado (chicken stew), white and yellow rice, beans, tostones (fried plantains), pernil (pork shoulder), and tres leches. Some of Centenary’s very own students made dishes themselves and others volunteered to serve the food.
The event began at 8 p.m. and students quickly piled into the building, eager to try the variety of foods and have a fun time with friends!
Centenary University junior Gabriela Vasconcelos said, “The fiesta is very welcoming and brings everyone together!”
Along with all of the delicious foods and pretty decorations, Centenary also provided a DJ to make the celebration a real fiesta. Hispanic artists, such as Bad Bunny and J Balvin, and Hispanic genres, such as bachata and reggaeton, could be heard even from outside of the building. While some students enjoyed their meal, others took to the dance floor!
Centenary University senior Osaivbie Igiebor shared, “It was a lot of fun getting to see everyone dance to all the music!”
With the fiesta’s huge success this year, I am sure Centenary’s students already can’t wait for next year's celebration!
