In a tournament powered by nostalgia, playful rivalries, and an eclectic mix of motivations, Nevaeh O'Keefe, a junior equine major, claimed a non surprising victory as she’s the reigning champion of Super Mario Kart showdown, earning the coveted gold medal and bragging rights among friends and classmates.
The tournament brought together ten players, each with their own reasons for competing; some came to win, others to reconnect with a beloved childhood game, and a few simply showed up for the fun. Despite their different goals, all found themselves caught up in the fast paced chaos of red shells, drifting turns, and final lap showdowns.
“I’m competitive,” said Teresa Gustin, who fondly remembered playing Mario Kart when she was younger.
Fern Rosario shared a more conflicted view, admitting, “I’d like to win because of my ego, but I can’t win,” as they returned to the game for the first time in a while.
Miguel Baldwin, who played the original on the Nintendo system, had a simple goal: “I want bragging rights.”
Not everyone arrived with a strong desire to win. “I was forced to come here - might as well win,” said Korren Ellis with a smirk. Meanwhile, Cameron Fulcher expressed pure enthusiasm for the game itself: “I just really like playing Mario Kart. I’ve been playing since I was five.” Yadim Cuffy made it clear the competition wasn't the priority. “I wanna play against my friend. I’m not in it for the win,” he said.
For some, the stakes were more personal. “I’d like to win. Out of all the four years I’ve been here, I’ve never won,” said Marcelle Mendiburu, hoping to finally break her dry streak.
Then, there was Nick Storms, who hosted the tournament on his own Nintendo Switch. “I don’t wanna win,” he admitted. “I’m here for the fun of it, since people are playing on my Switch with the kindness of my heart.”
As the tournament kicked off, the matchups delivered both intense action and comedic moments, with players of all skill levels racing for the podium. Early races saw Nick facing Erick, Jacoby taking on Erin, Marcelle battling Thomas, and Cameron racing against Miguel. Teresa, Fern, and Korren clashed in a dramatic three-way round, while Chelsea went head-to-head with Nevaeh O’Keefe, and Wick raced Gracie.
From the first lap, it was clear that skill alone wouldn’t decide the winner. The unpredictability of power ups, sudden comebacks, and narrow finishes kept everyone on edge. While some early favorites were eliminated in the chaos, Nevaeh steadily pushed through the brackets with focus and control, ultimately outpacing the competition in the final race to become the tournament champion.
Her victory was a fitting end to an event defined not just by speed and competition, but by the community and camaraderie it fostered. Though some racers entered hoping to win and others simply wanted to play, every participant contributed to a tournament filled with laughter, nostalgia, and the unpredictable magic that only Mario Kart can deliver. The winner’s quote was “I came this year not expecting to win just like last year but the competition was hard and I had fun and surprisingly took victory, I look forward to this event every year,” said. Nevaeh O’Keefe.
As the controllers were set down and the final standings locked in, one message rang clear: whether you came for the win or just the ride, this tournament was a victory for everyone.
