In a dazzling evening that left hearts aglow, Maryann McFadden, Hackettstown’s literary star, took center stage at Centenary University’s Taylor Memorial Library on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, for “An Evening with Maryann McFadden.” The event was a captivating experience that showcased McFadden’s literary prowess and brought attendees into the enchanting world of her work.
The event commemorated the release of the latest story by Hackettstonian author McFadden, titled “The Christmas Star.” This heartwarming novel beautifully captures the magic of home, second chances, and unexpected love.
“A Journey Home”: McFadden’s Connection to Centenary
McFadden’s roots in Hackettstown run deep, dating back to 1964 when her family made the migration down the mountain into the valley of the charming town. Speaking about her connection to Centenary, McFadden shared–
“Centenary is deeply tied to this town, so how could I not have a connection to it?” Having taught at the university in the early ‘80s and with her daughter completing both her BA and master’s degrees at Centenary, McFadden has been an integral part of the campus community.
Reflecting on her early days as a writer, McFadden spoke on how Centenary played an important role in her career–
“When I published my first novel in 2006, I decided to self-publish after facing rejection. Believing in my work, I was thrilled when Centenary offered me the front parlors for a book launch, an experience that made me feel like a rockstar! I sold over 100 books that night, which is no easy feat, especially for a self-published author.”
The event that took place on November 14th at Taylor Memorial Library further affirmed the unbreakable bond between McFadden and Centenary.
“It was almost like coming home,” McFadden shared, praising Colleen Bain, Centenary University’s archivist, and the library staff for their meticulous preparation.
The evening was filled with a fusion of community and university, as Bain mentioned an attendance of approximately 150 people who participated both online and in-person.
The Christmas Star Shines Bright
McFadden’s latest literary piece, “The Christmas Star,” unfolds in her beloved Hackettstown, offering a narrative woven with family secrets, second chances, and the magic of Christmas. The novel draws inspiration from the real-life star that graces Buck Hill, illuminating the town every Christmas since the end of World War II.
For protagonist Hope Reynolds, the star holds deep significance as she returns to her New Jersey hometown after a decade. The star, damaged in a recent superstorm, becomes the focus of Hope’s journey as she launches a fundraiser to restore its glow. Readers can expect a heartwarming exploration of miracles, love, and the essence of home from the book.

Emotional Echoes and a Shining Success
Reflecting on the success of the book launch that took place on Nov. 14, McFadden shared–
“Yes, I did sell 98 books. And yes, it is an impressive moment. I think people’s emotions were probably the most memorable for me.”
The audience’s reactions, the smiles, and the nods of agreement added to the emotional weight of McFadden’s connection to the town and its Christmas Star.
“I think it resonates with the local audience because everyone has their own emotional connection to the star. I think, and I hope, that for students at Centenary, whether they live here or not, when they look up, they feel something emotional. It doesn’t have to be religious. Just the symbol itself, and the fact that it represents hope and that feeling of never giving up."
McFadden emphasized the importance of embracing second chances, especially during the craziness of one’s college years–
“Let’s face it; being in college, there is so much going on in someone’s life, and so many big decisions to make. I think life should be fluid, and looking up at that star is the message that whatever you decide, it's going to be okay.”
Star-Studded Future
As “The Christmas Star” embarks on its journey as a new novel, McFadden looks forward to further events at bookstores, signings, and meetings with book clubs. Confident that her latest work will stand the test of time, she remarked—
“It’s the kind of story that becomes a classic. And my hope is that it will reach far and wide.”
With Hackettstown’s “Hometown Holiday Weekend” scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, just around the corner—an event in which McFadden plays a big role—she is extending an invitation to Centenary students.
“I do hope Centenary students take part in this because it really is special. Not every town has this. And the fact that the college participates and does such a beautiful job is one more reason that I hope Centenary students take advantage of this incredible evening.”
In the spirit of hope and the enduring magic of Hackettstown’s Christmas Star, Maryann McFadden leaves us with a final thought:
“When you see the star, you’ll know you’re home.”
As “The Christmas Star” continues to shine, McFadden’s literary legacy adds another glowing chapter to the story of Hackettstown.
