Centenary’s women’s volleyball team challenged Baruch College at the John M. Reeves Recreational Center on Thursday, Sept. 5. The Cyclones began their match against the Bearcats at 7 p.m. and were victorious, winning three sets to one.
During all four sets of the match, the Cyclones worked together to secure their decisive victory against the Bearcats. The frequent cheering and encouragement from the crowd added to the intensity of the match between both rivals.
“Work ethic is a cornerstone of our culture, and it’s something the Cyclones fully embrace,” said Brooke Armida, head volleyball coach. “Hard work and a refusal to quit are traits we want to be synonymous with our program.”
The Cyclones tested their strength against the Bearcats during the first two sets of the match. By the end of the first set, the Bearcats garnered 25 points, with the Cyclones behind with 19. The tables turned when the Cyclones consistently scored 25 points against the Bearcats from the second set onwards.
“I liked the energy the Cyclones had,” said Nick Payne, a Centenary student.
During this game, libero Asia Logan accrued six aces and 10 digs. The libero of the team is a defense specialist (DS) who plays a key part of the offense. Both outside hitter Poppy Skjonnemand and middle blocker/outside hitter Jenny Thistlethwaite offered two aces each. At the end of the four sets, setter/middle blocker/right-side hitter (RS) Kim Stallworth provided 25 aces and 12 digs, adding to the Cyclones’ tally record.
“The best part was just the team working together and proving that we can do it,” said senior DS Isabel Moreria.
“Keeping our confidence up during this game was challenging,” said freshman Ava Estrada, middle blocker.
The Cyclones won the match 3-1.
“The team has really embraced our ACE culture - Attitude, Communication, and Effort,” added Coach Armida. “The cohesiveness and chemistry of this team are already impressive, and it’s exciting to see how quickly they’ve come together.”
The Cyclones’ cumulative statistic as of this printing is 3-10 overall and 0-6 in the Atlantic East Conference.
