Centenary University women’s basketball team secured their victory against Cairn University at John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. This was the second victory this season.
114 spectators arrived at the basketball court, anxiously watching the Cyclones and the Highlanders battle each other. As the match progressed, the spectators’ cheering grew louder.
Senior guard Brie Opdyke, sophomore forward-player Vatijah Davis, and senior guard Kaylie Elsbree led the Cyclones.
Opdyke added 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Davis made 12 rebounds and scored 16 points to earn her first double-double of the season. Elsbree contributed six assists, six steals, one block, and four rebounds.
The Cyclones began the first quarter strong with 21 points. By the end of the second quarter, the team added 13 points to their tally. The cheering from the spectators grew each time the team demonstrated their hard work against the Highlanders. The first half concluded with Centenary ahead 34-30.
The Cyclones escalated the second half of the match by retaining their winning streak. The third and fourth quarters ended with the Cyclones garnering 20 points each, increasing their tally to 74 points.
The match concluded with the Cyclones overcoming their opponent 74-51.
Rose Haller, head women’s basketball coach, appreciated the team’s progress.
“Any win is a good win,” explained Haller, “[although] I don’t feel like we met a lot of our goals yet.”
“I expect the team to have a good season under Coach Haller and her staff,” said senior Dominic Salot.
As of this printing, the Cyclones’ record is 4-1 overall and 0-0 in the Atlantic East Conference.
