The Centenary Wrestling team runs Club Cyclone from 6-7 p.m. every Thursday. Club Cyclone is a fundraising night where the Centenary Wrestling Team welcomes high school athletes to come and get the full college experience. College wrestling is much different from high school due to the intensity it brings.
During Club Cyclone, Centenary college athletes volunteer their time to help high school athletes get better and achieve their goals on and off the mat. Coach John Garriques started the club at the end of last year with a goal to give back to the community and help out all high school athletes. The Centenary athletes who are instructors at this fundraising practice say it is very enjoyable giving back and helping out.
“This overall is an amazing opportunity for both college level and high school level athletes to make each other better. This gives the athletes an opportunity to learn in both teaching and learning. Overall there are about 20-30 athletes who come in to learn and/or teach,” said Coach Garriques. He looks to continue running this fundraiser to the season start.
“The club practices are a great opportunity for the college wrestlers to learn how to coach and spread their knowledge and it also gives the high schoolers a chance to feel what wrestling at the next level is like,” said Colin Neal, member of the CU Men’s Wrestling Team.
