The Centenary University Men’s Soccer Team fell short in the conference game with Marywood University during Alumni and Family Day on Saturday, Oct. 11.
While the results of the game didn’t favor the Cyclone’s way, it was a special day nonetheless as the Cyclones honored their seniors during a pregame ceremony for their contributions to the program.
The seniors celebrated during the pregame ceremony were; Kevin Velasquez Mejia, Brian Osorio, David Velasquez Jr, Brandon Morales, Harison Samayoa Lopez, Patrick Kelleher, Jacob Weiss, Jason Vella, Andre Ferreria, and Christian Ruiz.
During the first half, while it was raining like a waterfall, Marywood scored two goals in the first twenty-five minutes. But Centenary couldn’t let that affect them as they continued to fight for every open ball and pressure Marywood at every chance they could.
Unfortunately, a little bit before halftime, Centenary was called for a red card and could only play with 10 players for the rest of the game. A red card is when a player is immediately ejected from the game and cannot be replaced, forcing their team to play with one fewer player.
Nevertheless, the Cyclones continued to battle hard even down a player, but ultimately, they just couldn’t contain Marywood’s attack in the second half.
Marywood had a lead that was too tall to conquer, but the Cyclone’s only goal came from a penalty kick from number 10, Harison Samoya Lopez. He buried it in the back of the net, as the keeper had no chance in saving the kick. This gave the Cyclone’s fans and players something to celebrate late in the game.
Even though the Cyclones weren’t victorious, they showed a lot of heart and determination throughout the entire afternoon, despite downpouring rain and being down a player the whole second half.
The final score of this match was Marywood 4, Centenary 1. This result puts the Cyclones at a record of 3-9-1, but the Cyclones look to turn things around when they play Saint Elizabeth University on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. on the turf.
