The Super Bowl rematch 11 years in the making! This time, however, the Seattle Seahawks would emerge victorious and get revenge after all these years.
The Game
This wasn’t your typical close Super Bowl game. It was more like a bloodbath. The Seattle Seahawks dominated the game as they imposed their will by beating the New England Patriots 29-13 to win Super Bowl LX. For 60 minutes, the Seahawks outplayed the Patriots on both sides of the ball, especially on defense. Seattle’s defense has a nickname—“The Dark Side”—which was inspired by the gloomy and wet winter season in the Pacific Northwest and Coach Mike Macdonald's philosophy of making the stadium a place opposing offenses dread to play.
Seattle’s defense swarmed Patriots Quarterback (QB) Drake Maye all game long, barely giving him room to breathe in the pocket. Throughout the course of the game, QB Drake Maye turned the ball over three times to Seattle’s defense, one of which was intercepted for a 45-yard pick six by linebacker Uchenna Nwosu; that really sealed the Patriots fate in this game. Their defense was so dominant that they were able to sack QB Drake Maye six times, which completely stopped the Patriots offense for the first three quarters of the game.
Not only was Seattle’s defense dominating, but their rushing game and special teams kicker was unstoppable. Kicker Jason Meyers made the first 15 points of the game for Seattle with a Super Bowl record of five field goals. Running Back Kenneth Walker III gave a Super Bowl MVP winning performance for the Seahawks. By the time the game ended, Walker III had 135 rushing yards on 27 carries, as well as 26 yards receiving on two catches. Not only did Walker III win the Super Bowl MVP, but he also became the first running back to win a Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis in 1998. He also had the second most first half rushing yards in Super Bowl history with 94 yards on 14 carries.
The Patriots did show up, but they did so when the game was already too far out of reach. Maye connected with wide receiver Mack Hollins for a 35-yard touchdown (TD) pass to put them on the board and prevent the shutout. The only other time New England scored was with two and a half minutes to go in the game where Maye threw a pass to RB Rhamondre Stevenson who caught the ball literal millimeters from the ground and ran it seven yards to the endzone for the TD.
As the clock ticked down to zero and Seattle won the Lombardi Trophy, players celebrated on the field with each other and their family members. Confetti colored with the Seahawks colors flew in the air and fireworks went off around the stadium to commemorate the win. This win marks their second Super Bowl win in franchise history.
Campus Opinions
Super Bowl LX drew 124.9 million viewers making this event one of the most-watched Super Bowls in history. On the smaller screen here at Centenary, we wanted to get reactions to Super Bowl LX. While writing this story, we had some definite thoughts.
“Personally the game to me was a very slow and one-sided game,” said Danny Haws. “The Seattle Seahawks proved that their defense is very hard to get past and on the other side of things, the Patriots didn’t show much of what us football fans saw all year. Overall, the Super Bowl is always a fun time, but I thought the game could have been a lot better. As for the halftime show, I'm not really a Bad Bunny fan so I did not enjoy the halftime show as much, but I thought it was alright.”
“I thought the first half of the game wasn’t all that exciting, mostly because only one team was really doing anything,” said Tyler Altmann. “When the second half came on, it gained more of my interest as both teams started to find their own grooves within the game. I personally wanted Seattle to win because I am a New York Giants fan and I love watching the Patriots lose. It wasn’t a terrible game to watch as there have been worse Super Bowls than that,” said Altmann.
All that got us thinking: what did other students on campus think of the game? Staff writer Haws asked for some students' opinions on this year’s Super Bowl.
“I enjoyed the Super Bowl. It's something I look forward to as a football fan every single year,” said Hunter Cleaver.
“I thought the game was pretty boring, but the Superbowl is always a fun event to watch every year as it's winding the whole football season down,” said Colin Neal.
“I really enjoyed the superbowl. I thought the first half was super boring but I liked the halftime show. I thought that was cool and the second half was a little more enjoyable, just a very one-sided game,” said Daniel Gonzalez.
“I thought the game itself was alright. It wasn't the best superbowl I have watched, but the halftime show was pretty cool,” said Alex Mercado.
Next year’s Super Bowl is being played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California and is on February 14, 2027.
