The Centenary University Cyclones delivered a strong performance against the Marywood University women’s basketball team but ultimately fell short of the important win. The Atlantic East Conference quarterfinal game took place at the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center at Centenary University. The game held approximately 250 viewers in attendance.
Centenary University brought the game out in full effect finishing the first quarter on top with a score of 22-16. Unfortunately Marywood headed out in the second quarter ready to fight back. Both teams scored 18 points in the second quarter leaving the score 40-34 at half time.
The game was full of standout performances from multiple women on the Centenary Cyclones. Jasmine Sampong, Vatijah Davis, and Sofia Mendez all showcased their dedication to the team despite not being able to secure the victory. Sampong who scored an amazing 18 points, collected 7 rebounds, and locked down 3 steals. Davis extended the help with 17 points and 4 steals to help the team stay in the fight. And last but not least Mendez who contributed 13 points and 6 rebounds.
While the team took full advantage of their second chance opportunities, making 16 out of 73 points off of offensive rebounds, the team struggled in a very important category: free throws. The team made 13 of 22 shots from the free throw line.
Although Centenary held the lead for three quarters, they could not hold off in the final quarter. Marywood’s late fight ultimately secured them the win, scoring 26 points in the final quarter, while the Cyclones scored another 18. It boiled down to making final and crucial shots. Marywood made 24 of 29 shots from the free throw line securing the 77-73 win over the Clones.
Despite this loss, the Centenary Cyclones are refusing to back down. They’ll be back at it again next season. Stay tuned for more updates on our Lady Cyclones next semester.
As always, roll clones!
