Centenary University’s Women's Basketball Team, also known as the Lady Cyclones, had its first home game of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 11, against Wilkes University, and it was a knockout! The game began at 6 p.m. at the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, and by the time the game started, the crowd was exhilarated.
“Our goal every season is to win the conference,” said Rose Haller, associate director of athletics and head women's basketball coach. “Otherwise, why show up?” Haller started coaching here at Centenary University in 2016 and is eager for this season to begin.
The starting team consisted of Vatijah Davis (#30), Jasmine Sampong (#11), Kayla Sampong (#23), Makayla Williams (#14), and Alexa Osafo-Mensah (#42). The first quarter started slowly, with the Lady Cyclones having a three-point lead. Then, they scored 21 points while Wilkes only scored 12, finishing the quarter strong with a score of 35-23.
At the end of the second quarter, the Lady Cyclones scored three points in a row by all different players, making the defense steal the ball twice from the opposing team.
The Lady Cyclones led the entire game over Wilkes, scoring an impressive score of 77, while the Wilkers had 47.
Davis dominated the game by scoring 35 points, making her the player who received the most points on both teams. She secured 12 rebounds and four steals while on defense.
Another standout performer, senior Kayla Sampong (#23), was able to score 13 points, including rebounds and steals.
