*Spoilers Ahead*
Back in the 1860s, a man named Hector Urquhart wrote the following quote in the “Popular Tales of the West Highlands”, a four-volume collection of Scottish Gaelic folklore translated by John Francis. “One man's rubbish may be another's treasure." This would later become the statement many of us know today. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
That quote really is persistent in the story of Gachiakuta, a dystopian action manga created by Kei Urana in 2022. It would later get an animated adaptation in July of 2025. The first season of Gachiakuta was 24 episodes long and covered up to chapter 87 of the manga, with episode 24 setting up a big cliffhanger for the next season to pick up.
The production studio, Studio Bones, officially confirming the second season coming out between the end of 2026 or 2027, excitement for the new season is beginning to build. But before season two continues the story, let's look back on the first season and cover the events that took place.
The Sphere and The Pit
The show starts off with the episode “The Sphere,” where we meet Rudo Surebrec. A boy who lives in the slums of the Sphere with a knack for fixing up trash. We then meet his adoptive parent, Regto, who is upset about a trash heist he has committed the night before. Regto tells Rudo that if he continues these heists, he’ll be sent to “The Pit,” the edge of the Sphere and where all criminals fall.
The next day, Rudo walks through the slums till he can see the edge of the Sphere and the Pit. A crowd is swarmed around the edge as a criminal is dropped into the unknown. Rudo then runs home to speak to Regto, only to find him stabbed by a masked figure. Rudo tries to fight the figure but gets knocked out in seconds. Upon waking, the guards arrest Rudo and accuse him of killing Regto.
Rudo is then strung up by his arms over the edge of the Sphere. Accused of murder and sentenced to be dropped into the Pit. The people of the slums insult Rudo and the last face that Rudo saw was the mask killer. As he falls into the Pit, he vows to return to the Sphere and get his revenge on everyone there.
The Ground
Rudo survives the fall, landing in a landscape of garbage that came from the Sphere. Before he can figure out what happened, it begins to tremble as a gigantic monster made of trash appears and chases after Rudo. As he runs away from the monster, he meets a man with an umbrella. He puts a gas mask on Rudo and prepares to fight the trash beasts.
The man's umbrella begins to emit energy and changes into a drill-like weapon, destroying the beasts in seconds. The man obliterates all the trash beasts in explosive fashion and his umbrella turns back to normal. He introduces himself to Rudo as Enjin, and calls himself “a humble Cleaner.” Rudo then passes out.
Rudo wakes up, wrapped in a chain dragged by Enjin. He tells Rudo that the Sphere doesn’t stay in one place and that it’s impossible to get back up there. Enjin tosses Rudo in front of a gas station where he is captured by a group of ground dwellers. Rudo’s gloves begin to emit red energy and he shatters the chains that are wrapped around his arms, using them and other things around him to fend off the group.
Just before attacking the last man, Enjin stops Rudo, calming him down. Confused on how he was able to transform the things he touched, Enjin offers to explain everything he wants to know if he joins Enjin and works for the Cleaners—an organization that fights the trash beasts with special tools like Enjin’s umbrella.
Rudo originally declines this offer but eventually agrees after fighting another Cleaner named Zanka Nijiku. Rudo defeats him with one of the most disgusting weapons imaginable—let alone with the power Rudo has to enhance objects—a used plunger. Zanka and Rudo then meet up with Enjin and the three head to the Cleaners HQ, along with a fourth Cleaner: Riyo Reaper.
Upon reaching Cleaner HQ, Rudo is introduced to Semiu Grier. He teaches Rudo about the different places on the Ground, the safe zones and the polluted zones. The latter is where trash beasts come from. There are also areas called “The No Man’s Land”, places like where Rudo first landed.
Semiu hands Rudo a new gas mask, and Rudo follows Riyo Reaper to observe a maintenance job in a nearby town. A support Cleaner warns Riyo a herd of trash beasts–and a giant behemoth—is approaching. Riyo then pulls out her vital instrument, a pair of scissors that grow to the size of her, and battles the beasts. Along with the support cleaners and Rudo’s help, they destroy all the trash beasts, learning that the big beast is powered by a vital instrument.

Raider Contact
In the next episode, Semiu instructs Rudo, Zanka, and some support Cleaners to go out on a mission to find someone's cargo that was stolen by a trash beast. They are brought to where the trash beast is told to be located, but it turns out to be an ambush by a rival group called the Raiders.
The floor beneath the group gives way and they fall into the lower floor of the building they walked into. Two Raiders then step forward, one with a vital instrument, ordering the cleaners to hand over Rudo. Zanka squares off with the Raiders while Rudo and the supporters try to find an escape. Zanka easily takes down the two Raiders but is then ambushed by a third who was hiding.
We then cut back to Rudo and the support Cleaners finding an exit, but before Rudo and Gris Rubion are able to leave. The third Raider destroys the exit. The Raider sticks out his hands, showing the rings around his fingers as they begin to transform into long, sharp claws. He then knocks out a support Cleaner instantly. Rudo takes a talisman that the support Cleaner was carrying and transforms it into a defensive weapon. The Raider then introduces himself as Jabber Wonger, and the two begin to fight.
Eventually, Jabber figures out how the talisman’s power works and decides to use the ace up his sleeve, using his venom-laced claws on himself to make himself into a feral animal. He attacks with no real intention to do any damage. The two begin to clash again. Eventually, Zanka recovers from the venom in his system, joining Rudo and together temporarily defeating Jabber. Rudo’s defensive weapon then crumbles into dust and he passes out due to a cut from Jabber.
Jabber then regains consciousness, paralysing Zanka again and collecting Rudo. He gets out of the ruined building and is confronted by all the other cleaners, including Enjin and Riyo. Jabber then escapes, leaving Rudo to the Cleaners.
Returning to Cleaner HQ, Arkha Corvus—the boss of the Cleaners—meets Rudo and officially adds him to the Cleaners, giving him a new outfit and more information about getting back to the Sphere. Afterwards, everyone decides to have a rest day. Riyo gives Rudo a tour of the HQ, bumping into fellow Cleaners Bro and Dear Santa (yes, those are their names). Rudo then trains to understand how his powers work.
The next day, Rudo and a bunch of the Cleaners, including Tamsy Caines and Delmon Gates, set out to a place called Canvas town. There, they meet Remlin Tysark, a Cleaner who casts spells with art. Remlin paints a protection spell on each of the Cleaners and they set out on their next mission: travelling to a no man’s land and finding a woman who lives there, watching people from the Sphere fall and go back up.
The Woman in the No Man's land
Upon reaching the desert—no man's land—they instantly fight off trash beasts until the woman appears before them. She calls herself Amo, and she leads them to a tower in the middle of the no man’s land. While in the tower, Amo asks her visitors to take off their gas masks. Upon the group asking questions, Amo gets angry and starts controlling the Cleaners using her vital instruments: her boots. Eventually, Zanka and Tamsy are able to restrain all the Cleaners who were mind controlled.
With a tap of Tamsy’s instrument, the floor beneath them collapses and everyone falls to the bottom floor of the tower except Amo, seemingly killing them all. However, they were protected due to the spell placed on them back in Canvas town, freeing them from Amo’s control. After everyone puts on their gas masks, returning Amo’s boots, and getting some information about an “angel” flying between the Sphere and the Ground, the Cleaners leave Amo and head back to Cleaner HQ.
Raider’s Beast
The scene then cuts to a restaurant. Rudo, Riyo, Zanka, and Enjin are all there to have a bite to eat when suddenly, a girl in a monster onesie bursts through the door. Her name is Guita Hebby Fantasia, a cartoony and childish Cleaner. Followed closely by Bro and Dear, they join in and enjoy the food. Rudo slips away and sits down at a separate table. A hooded man begins talking to Rudo and shows him Amo’s pair of boots. The hooded man reveals that he is the leader of the Raiders. The Cleaners attempt to attack, but are all pulled into a manhole portal, along with the Raider’s leader and Rudo.
All the Cleaners end up in a dark cave-like room. Annoyed they couldn’t get desert before turning to see the full team of Raiders. The teams begin to converse until a flood of trash explodes out of the side of the cave, pushing everyone down different tunnels except for Rudo. The Raider leader sends the other Raiders to find the cleaners. Giving him and Rudo time to talk. He introduces himself as Zodyl Typhon and offers to team up with Rudo to take down the Sphere. We then see cuts of the Cleaners meeting the Raiders who were sent out.
Rudo is taken to the core of the trash beast, where Zodyl attaches Amo’s boots to it. Zodyl then reveals that his original goal was to add to a set of items: the Watchmen series. The items in this series—Zodyl’s coat, Amo’s boots, and Rudo's gloves—are recognised by their symbol. Zodyl then uses his coat to increase the trash beast’s power. Rudo again rejects Zodyl’s offer to help him attack the Sphere and prepares to fight.
After all the Cleaners deal with their attackers, Enjin plans to group up with everyone again by smashing through a wall at random, ending up in the same room as Zodyl and Rudo. The other Cleaners soon follow.
Upon everyone's arrival, the trash beast begins to take flight, limiting how much time the Cleaners have. Rudo then goes to attack the beast’s core but is blocked by Bundus, the Raider sent to fight Dear and Bro. As the other Cleaners try to attack, Bundus blocks each of their attacks with his metal arms. Rudo then uses the power of his gloves to their full power, awakening them and creating a nail gun turret. He fires through all of Bundus’s metal arms, destroying them. Before the Cleaners have enough time to attack the exposed core, they all turn to Zodyl as he prepares to escape, bringing Bundus with him and vanishing.
Suddenly, a hole breaks open in the side of the trash beast. The Cleaners struggle to hold on until Guita uses her vital instrument, her monster onesie, growing her size to the same as a kaiju and plugging the hole. The Cleaners then get up and are able to destroy the core, causing the beast to crumble. They climb on the Kaiju Guita and survive the fall back to the ground. A calvary of support Cleaners shows up and returning to Cleaner HQ.
Field Trip
Episode 23 starts with Enjin, Rudo, Delmon Gates, and a support Cleaner returning from a shopping run. The four return to Cleaner HQ and visit Zanka, who is recovering from Jabber’s attacks. Remlin, the spellcaster from Canvas Town, also visits Zanka and apologizes for messing up his protection spell. Zanka laughs it off and admits that he was at fault for losing. Rudo then tries to comfort Remlin by drawing with them. As they draw, Dear and Guita join in on the fun.
Eventually, Arkha Corvus visits the four and sends them on a mission to Canvas town, with Rudo leading the group while Enjin and Bro observe them. Remlin then shows everyone a mural where Rudo spots the design of the Watchmen series, revealing that Rudo’s father was friends with the original mural painter.
Final Takeaway
That is everything shown in the first chapter of the animated adaptation of Gachiakuta. As a major fan of this series, I can’t wait to watch the next chapter when it releases.
