Maybe it's Friday, and that's pizza night, or maybe it's just a regular day and you want some slices. Since 2016, Davila’s Pizza and Catering, located on 190 Main Street, has been well known among many Centenary students.
Not too far from the Centenary University campus, you can take a quick 5-minute drive or a nice 15-minute walk on a beautiful autumn day. This is perfect if you don’t have a car on campus as other pizzerias are only available by car.
Like I said, this is a known favorite by many Centenary students. “In the beginning we didn’t get as many, but now we get a lot of students from Centenary,” said Micheal, an employee from Davila’s.
I walked in and got a breath of fresh- no, not air- but a breath of fresh dough. All of the scents were hitting me in the face one after another. This place made me feel at home. A nice italian vibe came with it, with nice hardwood floors, and the classic painted walls of stone windows.
I was greeted by the staff in a friendly manner, telling me to take my time and choose anything I’d like.
A complete menu, with everything from calzones, to subs, to pizza, I couldn’t decide. With everything smelling amazing it was a tough question on what to get.
“It's great pizza and has so many options to create your own pie,” Centenary student Dom Salot stated.
I decided to keep it simple– one calzone, a slice of sausage pizza, and a cannoli.
The pricing was excellent, about average or less than other pizzerias. There is even a deal of two slices and a can of soda for $5. You can't beat that.
Another positive to this place is that you do not have to take it to go. They have some tables, along with a counter near the window for a view of Main Street. Although it does get busy, you should definitely get a table anytime you go in for some food.
I took a seat, and no more than five minutes later my food was out. It came with speedy service, as I could barely begin doom scrolling on Facebook Marketplace by the time I got my food.
The food was fresh and tasted quality. You could taste every little spice in the sauce, with the perfectly made dough and cheese. For the cannoli, the filling fixed my sweet tooth and, with every bite, I wished it never came to an end. It was made right on the spot as every ingredient tasted fresh. Overall, I really liked the food.
It’s already a well-known spot for Centenary students and locals, but I recommend it for those who don’t know about it.
"Being from New Jersey, I may be biased about pizza, given NJ is known as the second best state for pizza in this country. Here in Hackettstown, there are plenty of places with great pizza and DaVila's is no exception,” said Centenary student Alexis d’Ambly. “DaVila's is- what I consider- the definition of NJ pizza. It's perfectly cheesy, greasy, and one of my favorites. It's also family owned and not a part of a major chain, which is one of my markings for inferior pizza. And, it's in a perfect, accessible location on Main Street for Centenary students and Hackettstown locals alike."
From the fresh food to the pricing to the friendly staff greeting me in and letting me stare at the menu with 10 different foods to try for next time, everything was amazing.
