Selena Quintanilla’s killer, 64-year-old Yolanda Salvidar, has been in prison for the past 30 years since the death of the singer. March 30, 2025 will mark the 30th anniversary of the singer’s death. Saldivar will not be eligible for parole again until 2030.
Selena deserves justice, and she got it.
Selena Quintanilla was the queen of Tejano (Tex Mex) music, and she will always be.
In a Corpus Christi hotel in March of 1995, Selena and her ex fanclub organizer had a meeting in room 158. This meeting was caused because Saldivar had been caught stealing money from the Quintanilla family and Selena went to give Saldivar the papers. She went with her husband, Chris Perez, just to be safe.
When Selena went into the room, it immediately became an argument, and then she gave Salvidar the ring that she gave her as a present back. That triggered her and she shot Selena. In many interviews about the shooting, Salvidar says that she was going to shoot herself, which many people don’t believe and I don’t either.
I have been following this case since I have learned about Selena and her legacy in senior year of high school, and the whole case to this day boggles my mind.
Selena was a very giving and trusting person. This case made me really realize that you can’t trust ANYONE. Saldivar took everything from Selena. Not just her money, but her life. Could you imagine if you trusted someone with your whole soul and she killed you? I can’t. Now I know not to.
Selena is the perfect example of an artist gone way too soon. So many of us who have been listening to her music for such a long time have a very close connection with her. I find that when the artist is dead, the closer the connection is. But to me that is sad. People only remember people when they are dead. Selena was well appreciated when she was alive but more when she was gone because it was so sudden.
We all need to appreciate Selena and what she gave to the music industry and Tejano community.
Many people will be dreaming of Selena forever and ever, and I will as well.
