Are you a fan of Michael Jackson? Are you a fan of his music and his dancing? Then MJ: The Musical on Broadway is the perfect show for you! The show is about Michael Jackson and how he became famous. My mom, brother, and I went to go see the show a few weeks ago and we thought it was great! The actor who played Michael Jackson did an awesome job and he even sounded like Michael Jackson a lot. The show featured almost every famous Michael Jackson hit song, including “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” and “Beat It.” The show even had a few Jackson 5 songs, including “I Want You Back” and “ABC.”
Michael Jackson was originally played by Myles Frost, for which he won for Best Actor in a Musical in 2022. He’s now currently being played by Elijah Rhea Jackson. However, when we went to see the show, Michael Jackson was played by an understudy named Brett Gray. We were disappointed the original actor wasn’t in the show that day, but Brett Gray was still great! A few of the other current cast members are Apollo Levine, Whitney Bashor, Sasha Allen, and Tavon Olds-Sample.
The musical takes place in 1992 during Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour. The story is about Michael Jackson, who is fighting with his agents about trying to have his shows how he wanted them. Another thing I found interesting about the show was that Michael Jackson still had to fight for his fame even though he was already starting to become so famous.
In the show, there are three actors who play Michael Jackson. There’s a kid who played him as a little boy in the Jackson 5, an actor who played him as a teenager, and another actor who played him as an adult. The boy who played him as a kid was great! But I thought the actor who played him as a teenager wasn’t nearly as good as I thought and he wasn’t that strong. He didn’t really sound like Michael Jackson or as good as Brett Fray. There were also actors who played his siblings in the Jackson 5. I thought they were excellent! The actor who played his father, Apollo Levine, also did an amazing job! He sounded so believable as he was mean to Michael Jackson when he was a kid just like his real father was in real life.
The show is currently playing at the Neil Simon Theatre in Manhattan. The director and choreographer of the show is Christopher Wheeldon. There is also a book written for the musical that was written by Lynn Nottage. The book is called “MJ: The Musical,” as it was written for the show. The musical opened on Broadway in 2021, and it has been nominated for many Tony awards, including Best Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Sound Design.’’ As of Feb. 2025, the musical has grossed over $250 million.
In conclusion, I would probably give the musical a 4 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend it for anybody who is a fan of Michael Jackson, especially his dancing. I would love to see the show again one day!
