Troy Sumpter was an inaugural member of The Cyclone Chronicle and former news editor from Fall 2023 to Spring 2025.
Troy Sumpter visited the Newspaper Production Studio class via Microsoft Teams to talk to old friends and give new staff writers advice on interviewing techniques, inspiring the idea for these alumni articles, on Thursday, Sept. 25
He graduated in May 2025 from Centenary University with a bachelor’s in creative writing, where he had taken seven courses in writing and journalism with Newspaper Adviser Janet Zatta.
Troy is currently attending Bowie State University in Bowie, MD, pursuing his master’s degree in creative writing, and is a staff writer on The Spectrum, their student newspaper. He is also looking to switch his writing concentration and is applying to a graduate program in Journalism at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD.
He advises graduating seniors to be optimistic. “If you want to do your master’s, you can, but a master’s is optional. If you want to go out into the field, do it. The opportunities are rare, but they will come up.”
