There truly is something mournful about the last few sunrises and sunsets at the end of summer. It almost felt like those relaxed days, sitting out on the porch and watching over that sunny yard, were going to continue for the whole rest of the year.
The caveat, and this is coming from someone with a birthday basically at the end of August, it always feels like you've gone and had the rug pulled out from underneath you. And as soon as you realize someone had taken the time to actually do that to you, summer's decided to pack its bags and move back to California because, “The industry's changed! You've changed! I miss my cat at home!”
Despite that, I still love the summer. It is the time that gives you any excuse to do what motivates you, what makes you relaxed. And for those who just don't get it, they could really spend their time doing something… better. Unless that's how they relax. Which is just downright sad at that point.
But… When it comes to the entrance of the Fall season, there's something else stirring. Now, I don't believe it's that tinge of pumpkin spice, coursing through your nostrils as you walk past the local coffee, despite what others say. Not that cooler fall air that blows past, nor the beginning of a new semester for school, not that there isn't anybody out there who does enjoy that. And certainly not, that horrid Christmas section that Lowe's has decided to put up before it was even close to October in the slightest, like we're uncivilized?!
No, it's that creeping sensation when the dark starts to creep up on those early summer nights. That tingling feeling creeping up your spine seeing that claw coming up out of that bathtub, that faceless hockey mask, that old hotel carpet with the hypnotic, hexagon pattern; the feeling that 61 days stand between you and that night slowly creeping closer and closer, until it's got you sucked in.
In the end, I will always mourn summer… but I just know that something truly scary, comes out of season.
