In an effort to amplify academia and exercise, Nick Ferrelli, the instruction and outreach librarian at Taylor Memorial Library, has launched the Lift and Learn program. Hosted every Monday from 4:30-5:30 p.m., this innovative initiative allows students to ask research questions while breaking a sweat at the campus gym.
The brainchild of Ferrelli, the program aims to promote a healthy lifestyle while encouraging intellectual curiosity. He started the program to help relieve research anxiety on campus.
“There’s a stigma around going for help,” Ferrelli explained. “My position is in Instruction and Outreach, so, for me, with almost 20 years of working in libraries, I make the effort to engage people beyond the walls of the library.”
Between reps, Ferrelli checks citations, helps students navigate the library database, and proofreads.
“It’s also the participant’s opportunity to engage the public. If they see me lifting weights the wrong way, they’re more than welcome to come [to] correct me,” Ferrelli laughed. “It’s lifelong learning that works both ways. You get help, I get help. Everyone has something that they can teach somebody else.”
The program has garnered positive feedback from students who appreciate the flexibility and accessibility it offers. By attending Lift and Learn, students are not only getting answers but fostering a sense of community and developing habits for lifelong learning.
“I do it because I love to work out. Working out relieves a lot of stress,” Sussex County Community College (SCCC) student Tzuriel Louis said.
“I like going there because it allows me to challenge myself,” SCCC student Keon Mayes added. “That’s the best thing for me.”
Through Lift and Learn, Centenary is setting a new standard for holistic and creative education, proving that the pursuit of knowledge is not restricted to within the classroom or a traditional library.
