With a return of an intense showdown – with colossal prizes at stake – 17 Centenary University students and local gamers alike clashed in an epic Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament… Let’s get ready for round two. Sponsored by Gans Media, CycloneCon held a Super Smash Bros. tournament. This event was held on Saturday, Apr. 5, 2025, in the Cyber Space located in the Student Activities Center (SAC).
This was a 17-entrant double-elimination tournament style, where the first place winner received a $50 Gans Media gift card, the second place winner received a $25 Gans Media gift card, and the third place winner received a CycloneCon t-shirt.
Julian Alston, a freshman at Centenary and Campus Clash tournament winner, won the event. Andre Timmons, runner-up in the event, and Jacoby Stewart, sophomore at Centenary, won a CycloneCon t-shirt for third place.
This is what the participants had to say after the tournament:
“Winning the Smash Bros Tournament was great because, like last time in September, I thought I was going to lose. I enjoyed the competition once again. I would definitely encourage people to go next time,” said Alston.
“It was a fun experience and I’d do it again if the opportunity ever arises,” said Timmons, runner-up of the tournament.
“Another great tournament I was glad to be at. The pressure was high, and battles were intense. Although I only made 3rd, I was astounded by the extreme difference in battle for the title. It was like none other,” said Stewart.
“But next time, the title will be mine,” said Stewart.
“It was nice to get together with people of all ages and skill levels and share a game or two with them. It also made the Cyber Space feel lively with all the people and screens going,” said Nevaeh O’Keefe, sophomore at Centenary.
This event was a success. There were so many students, staff, and residents inside and outside of Hackettstown who all had a great time during this event. When CycloneCon comes back next year, you can bet that the Smash Tournament will also be back, and we hope to see you there.
