Centenary men’s baseball team played against Gwynedd Mercy in a close game at Our Diamond of Dreams on Friday, Mar. 22 at 3 p.m.
It was a cold afternoon, with wind speeds accelerating up to 10 miles per hour. The spectators were visibly shivering, layered in hoodies, coats, and gloves.
Since this was the first Atlantic East Conference baseball game of the season, the Cyclones challenged the Griffins with their best effort.
Throughout all nine innings of this close game, the Cyclones struggled to secure their victory against Gwynedd Mercy. Both the Cyclones and the Griffins were held scoreless through four innings.
By the end of the fifth inning, the Cyclones managed to earn one run, and the Griffins scored three. As a result, the Cyclones were outmatched by the Griffins.
Centenary’s key players in this loss included Marty Lucibello and Dominick Zinna, who battered up two hits. Louie Vassallo was able to score one run for the Cyclones during the fifth inning.
“Our expectations are very high,” said Brandon Smith, Centenary men’s baseball team captain. “Our goal is to finish with a strong record, play for the conference title, and exceed past conference play.”
“It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish,” added Smith.
The overall record for the Cyclones is now 6-10 and 0-1 in the Atlantic East Conference.
Despite this loss, the Cyclones are refusing to back down.
The Cyclones will face Gwynedd Mercy again during a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 24 in Pennsylvania. Good luck, Cyclones!
