It’s a winning season for Sussex County Community College’s football team. Their homecoming game against Hocking College occurred at Lenape Valley Regional High School in Stanhope, New Jersey on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023.
Centenary University sponsored two buses from the college in addition to refreshments, including a sorority bake sale by Theta Epsilon Nu. This was SCCC’s fifth football game of the season, and a number of Centenary students were in attendance.
As the game commenced against Hocking, the crowd was cheering for the SCCC football team. The success of the sorority bake sale and the smell of hot chocolate filled the air, adding to the festivities.
Scores for both SCCC and Hocking were close by the end of the first quarter. SCCC received 14 points, while Hocking received only 12 points. SCCC collected two points after the second touchdown during the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Hocking struggled to put points on the board, while in the third quarter, they managed to make a touchdown that added six very important points to their tally.
Meanwhile, the SCCC Skylanders consistently earned seven points in both the second and third quarters.
In the fourth quarter, SCCC secured a touchdown, successfully followed by a point and a field goal. Meanwhile, Hocking managed to score a touchdown, along with a two-point conversion.
The game concluded with a final score of 38 in favor of Sussex County and 26 for Hocking.
“It was a close game because of how suddenly Sussex County scored a touchdown against Hocking College at the last minute,” said Sophia Pellegrino, a senior at Centenary University and member of the Theta Epsilon Nu sorority.
SCCC outpassed their opponent by 188 passing yards. The Skylanders monopolized the game, maintaining the ball for 52 plays and gaining 453 yards. The yardage was 2.5 times that gained over Hocking.
Congratulations, Skylanders!
