The Most Royal of Rumbles

The Royal Rumble is the biggest day in pro- wrestling, an annual event, with three matches: one women’s match, one regular match, and one men’s match. There’s no difference in matches except for gender. 

I watched this because my boyfriend has a large interest in WWE and I thought, since I am getting back into my sporting days, why not?

WWE is pro-wrestling. What you see on TV is not real, it is all scripted and all the winners are pre-planned. When I started watching wrestling, I thought it was all real. None of it is, except for the injuries. Although, all the hard work these wrestlers put into their craft is. These are all stories, each match is a story for a wrestler or two. Some stories can have up to 6 wrestlers, called tag-teaming. 

Going into the event, each of these matches (the women’s and men’s), there are two people in the ring at a time and, once that is over, more wrestlers enter the ring. Every 6 minutes, two more people come into the ring. At a time, there are 30 wrestlers in the ring. The point of the match is for most wrestlers to get eliminated. At the end, there is one winner and everyone during the match has to throw each other off the top of the ring to get eliminated. This year’s Royal Rumble included:

Rhea Ripley

Gunther

Jey Uso 

The winners of each match were Liv Morgan, who won the women’s match, and Roman Reigns, who won the men’s match. Between AJ Styles and Gunther, (AJ Styles) whose career was going to end based on what happened in the match. Although he was really retiring anyway. Personally, I do not like Gunther. He is considered and has the name of the “Career Ender” and his character seems like a jerk and, to me, very violent in the ring. 

Career ender means that this wrestler (AJ Styles), will be done with his career if he loses against Gunther so that is technically who he is. This is for wrestlers who plan on retiring but want their fans to see them take back what they had even if it is going to happen anyway. This is how it is scripted. Gunther is the official Career Ender, it is his title. 

As much as I dislike Gunther, I really like Rhea Ripley. When she is in that ring, she puts everything into her performance, and you can tell she enjoys the wrestling ride. Really genuine. 

I loved this event as my first to watch because I thought everything was action packed but was surprised about actual violence. 

As the first WWE full wrestling show I have seen, I enjoyed it. I thought it was action packed and I genuinely want to watch more wrestling now. I thought maybe one day I would like wrestling but now I do!
